The Role of Repetition

Why Regular Brain-Based Adjustments Matter: Your Brain Learns Through Repetition

We often think of chiropractic care as something we seek when we are in pain. But at Joshua Wellness Practice, our approach goes much deeper.

We are interested in helping the brain and nervous system become more adaptable, resilient and better able to respond to the demands of everyday life.

One of the reasons regular brain-based chiropractic care can be so valuable is because of a fundamental principle of neuroscience: the brain changes through experience and repetition.

As neuroscientist John Medina explains in Brain Rules, the brain is not a static structure. It is constantly adapting to the experiences we give it. Understanding this helps explain why regular care is not simply about addressing a symptom—it is about giving the brain repeated opportunities to experience a different neurological pattern.

Stressed Brains Don't Learn the Same Way

One of Medina's key principles is:

Brain Rule #8: Stressed brains don't learn the same way.

When the brain perceives ongoing stress, its priorities change.

Instead of focusing on learning, healing, creativity, connection and long-term adaptation, the nervous system can become increasingly focused on survival.

This makes sense biologically. If your brain believes you are under threat, it doesn't necessarily want to spend energy learning something new. It wants to protect you.

Modern life can create this pattern without any obvious major trauma. Busy schedules, poor sleep, emotional stress, constant stimulation, excessive screen time, artificial light at night and a lack of recovery can all contribute to a nervous system that spends too much time in a heightened state of stress.

And the longer this pattern is repeated, the more familiar it can become to the brain.

This Is Where Neuroplasticity Matters

One of the most important discoveries in neuroscience is neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to change its structure and function in response to repeated experiences.

In simple terms:

What the brain repeatedly experiences, it becomes better at doing.

If we repeatedly experience stress, the brain can become very efficient at responding to stress.

But the opposite is also true.

When we repeatedly provide experiences of safety, regulation, movement, focused attention, recovery and appropriate sensory input, we can give the brain opportunities to develop different patterns.

This is why we don't simply want to ask, "How do you feel today?"

We want to consider:

What patterns is your brain practising every day?

Brain Rule #5: Repeat to Remember

Medina's fifth Brain Rule highlights another important principle:

Repeat to remember.

The brain learns through repetition.

Think about learning to ride a bicycle, play an instrument or develop a new sporting skill. You don't perform the skill once and expect your brain to permanently change.

You practise.

You repeat.

You make mistakes.

You try again.

Over time, the brain builds stronger and more efficient neurological pathways.

The same principle applies to the patterns of the nervous system.

If your brain has spent years developing a particular response to stress, simply telling yourself to "relax" may not be enough. The brain may need repeated experiences that demonstrate another way of responding.

Brain Rule #6: Remember to Repeat

Medina's sixth principle takes this idea even further:

Remember to repeat.

Learning isn't simply about experiencing something once. The brain benefits from revisiting and reinforcing what it has learned.

This is one reason regular care can be so important.

A brain-based adjustment is not intended to be a magic switch that permanently changes everything after one visit. Rather, the adjustment can be viewed as a pattern interrupt—an opportunity to provide the brain and nervous system with a different sensory experience.

Repeated over time, these experiences may help reinforce new neurological patterns.

This is particularly important when someone has spent years operating in a familiar stress pattern.

You Are What You Repeat

There is a powerful principle here that extends beyond chiropractic:

You are what you repeat.

Every day, your brain is receiving information from your environment and your lifestyle.

The light you expose yourself to.

The quality of your sleep.

The way you breathe.

The way you move.

The thoughts you repeatedly think.

The amount of time you spend recovering.

The way you respond to stress.

And, importantly, the sensory information your brain receives through the nervous system.

All of these experiences become part of the information your brain uses to predict what it should do next.

Why Regular Brain-Based Chiropractic Care?

At Joshua Wellness Practice, we believe the goal isn't simply to make you feel better temporarily.

The bigger goal is to help your brain and nervous system become more adaptable.

Regular brain-based adjustments provide repeated opportunities to interrupt established neurological patterns and reinforce a more balanced response.

This is also why we don't believe that care should necessarily stop simply because a symptom has disappeared.

The disappearance of a symptom can be an important milestone—but it doesn't necessarily mean the underlying neurological pattern has completely changed.

Just as it takes repetition to learn a new skill, it can take repetition to develop greater neurological adaptability.

From Recovery to Resilience

We often describe care as moving through stages:

Recovery → Healing → Adaptability → Resilience

Initially, someone may seek care because they are struggling with pain, tension or another symptom.

As the brain and nervous system begin to change, the focus can shift toward improving function and adaptability.

Ultimately, the goal is resilience—the ability to experience life's challenges without being thrown so easily back into an old stress response.

That takes time.

And it takes repetition.

Give Your Brain Something New to Practise

Your brain is constantly learning.

The question is not whether your brain is changing.

The question is what you are teaching it through repetition.

If your daily life repeatedly tells your brain that you are under pressure, rushed, overstimulated and unable to recover, that pattern can become increasingly familiar.

But when you intentionally introduce experiences of safety, connection, movement, recovery and healthy neurological input—and reinforce them consistently—you give your brain a different lesson to learn.

This is why regular brain-based chiropractic care can be part of a bigger strategy for brain and nervous system health.

Repeat to remember.
Remember to repeat.
And give your brain the experiences you want it to become better at.

At Joshua Wellness Practice, our focus is not simply on your symptoms. We look at the brain and nervous system as the foundation for how your body responds and adapts to life.

Because a healthier brain isn't just about feeling better today.

It's about building a nervous system that is better prepared for tomorrow.

When does health begin?

Our health begins at conception. If the building blocks that are available (from the parents) are not healthy, the foetus may start its journey through life behind the eight-ball. Care must be taken by people considering starting or adding to a family to ensure they are functioning at their optimal level of health.

Chiropractic care is effective in helping people of all ages to reach their optimal health.

Babies

The physical and chemical stresses of the birth process are a very significant factor in the health of a baby. Drugs used during pregnancy and/or at the time of birth; unnatural neck positions, the force of contractions on a tiny baby's body, together with the use of forceps, vacuum or cesarean sections can dramatically impact on a new-born's health.

All of this, together with the health of the parents during the pregnancy and the up-coming challenges of learning to walk etc. that children face are all reasons why babies to be checked by a chiropractor.

Adults

Research shows that up to 40% of 15 year old children have some type of chronic condition 1 and 85% of all adults will suffer back pain bad enough to keep them off work at some stage in their lives 2 . These are not favorable statistics.

What is it that sees so many people unhealthy?
Our lifestyle contains many stresses - spiritually, emotionally, chemically and physically. We all face these stresses, but if our body is not functioning at 100% of its potential (if there is nervous system interference), these stresses will cause our body to break down over time as it fails to adapt.

Isn't it smart to get and keep your nervous system and body working at its full potential?

Children

Part of growing up is learning to ride bikes, climb trees, play sports and even wrestle with siblings.

It is also a time that the body will grow and develop both physically and mentally faster than at any other time during life. Just because kids often do not complain of symptoms does not mean their bodies are functioning at their true potential.

The nervous system interference controls growth, healing, learning and development. A body free of nervous system interference will have the best possible chance to function and develop to the highest level.

Chiropractic care is for kids too...

The health of your children and wanting the very best for them must be one of the most important things a parent can desire. Wanting to see them grow up and develop to their true potential is a thing that parents seek. It is natural to want the very best for your kids.
On the other hand, an unhealthy child can be trying to a family. The feeling of helplessness, and not knowing which way to turn can bring great amounts of distress. As a child grows and develops both mentally and physically, it is vital that their nervous system is working free of interference.

You are never too old or too young to have your nervous system balance checked.
